NOVEMBER
12– the MOM and the ministry of water and the
environment, on one side, and the BGR, a German
institute for geological and natural resources
studies, signed the Cooperation Agreement. The BGR
shall fund the Geothermal Energy Project with an
amount of 300 thousand Euros.
The BGR’s
contribution is part of the first phase of the
Project which is also financed by the Yemeni
government and donors with a total amounting to two
million dollars. Such money is allocated for
drilling operations to reach a depth of 2000 meters
under earth surface. Such operations would be
carried out in Dhamar-Rada’a block by a geothermal
crew of the geological survey and mineral resources
board (GSMRB) and the ministry of water and the
environment. This work would last for two years.
More over,
the purpose of the Agreement is to enable concerned
parties do exploratory studies and drillings on the
potentials of Alessee and Isbeel in producing
electric power. As soon as feasibility studies are
done and the depth of the drilling is defined, power
can be produced with lower prices than the current
ones. It is possible to draw findings during
exploratory studies and drillings stage and such
results would be offered to investors or to the
ministry of electricity to invest in electric power
eclectic generation by using geothermal energy.
According
to reports on environmental issues, geothermal
energy does not harm the environment because hot
water is its source and thus there is no radiation
harming the environment.
Eventually,
the agreement was signed by Yemen’s representatives,
Mr. Khaled Bahah, MOM minister and Abdurrahman Fadl
Al-Iryani, minister of water and environment as well
as Ms. Catherine Kassel, representing the BGR
